Widely published author visits CSS
James Roy, an Australian children’s author with over 30 books published, visited CSS on the 25th February. He spoke to all Year 3 students during the day about his own introduction to writing – surprisingly it was via computer games!
Students were entertained by his stories that showed how using computer games helped him to build skills for writing. Developing characters, building cities, always searching for authenticity, learning how to meld the real with the unreal and finally building in the unexpected. The sub-text was specifically that a good story, must have a believable plot, realistic characters and a complication. The complication was a frustration for the character which had to be worked through within the confines of the story. Complex creative issues were dealt with in a friendly and humorous way. Interested and motivated students from each session stayed behind to discuss writing issues with James after each session.
